"Here's How I Lost 13 Kilos After The Birth Of My Second Child"


When 2020 started Shanee Minnaar set out her resolution that "SHE WOULD LOSE WEIGHT"  Just two months after giving birth to her second baby she was determined to bounce back to her best!  Here is how she did it




Can you share more about yourself? When and how did you discover your passion for fitness (and health)?

I've always tried to be fit I actually enjoy the feeling of getting a good workout but I was never really successful. I was never consistent enough so I never saw the results I was after.I was the person always starting the year off going to the gym and new me vibes. Tried a whole lot of different things you name it that was me. But it never really stuck and then I had my first child. The first year I didnt do much workouts or anything I just tried to figure out my new role as a mom. I started training again and eating healthy after my daughter was just over a year old and all went well for about 3months or 4months till I fell pregnant again. 

For 9 months I basically prepped myself mentally on how I was going to succeed this time and I firmly believe thats why I've gotten as far as I have. I planned it first before actioning. Like they say if you fail to plan you plan to fail right.

 

Were you an active and healthy teenager or do you suffer from weight issues in your younger days?

I wont say I was an active teenager but I never struggled with weight when I was younger I was actually really lean.  I weighed 48kg till my late teens.

How much weight did you pick up with your first baby?  Did you lose the weight before baby number 2 arrived?

When I fell pregnant I weighed around 62kg and I picked up about 16 kg while pregnant. I was just under 80kg when I gave birth. 

Post birth I weighed 72kg and I was fluctuating between 69-72kg when I fell pregnant again,so I never really lost the baby weight after my first pregnancy. 

With my second pregnancy I gained even more weight and I weighed 84kg before I gave birth and my post birth weight when I started my health and fitness journey was 75kg in January 

 

What do you think contributed to the weight gain? 

I love food, sweets and chocolate are my favorites. I'm also a lover of pizza and chicken wings. I used to just eat without paying attention to how much junk I was consuming in a day. 

I'd have like a sandwich toastie at work for breakfast with a coffee or hot chocolate. I'd then have lunch at the canteen and post lunch id have sweets/chips and a coldrink each day and weekends it was takeouts

 

What made you decide that you were going to get your health back and embark on this transformation?

I felt sluggish all the time I couldn't keep up with my daughter. I had really difficult pregnancy's and I just felt uncomfortable all the time in my clothes and simple things would just exhaust me. I also wanted to be a mom that could be active and run around with my kids and I wasn't able to. I knew that I had to do something after I had my son because there was no way I would be able to keep up with 2 kids when I could barely 1.

 

What route or plan did you decide to embark on to lose the weight? What was the strategy?

I love the BBG sweat app and I used it before. Its pretty user friendly and minimal equipment. I never knew what to do at the gym and this guided me exactly its like a personal trainer on ur phone. This was step 1 find a workout plan i enjoyed. Step 2 clean up my diet wow this was tough I cut out everything in terms of sweets and chips and everything in between

 

What is your secret recipe for motivating yourself to work out?

I know what it feels like to fail and I want to know what succeeding feels like. This is my reminder everytime I want to skip a workout or give up.

 

What foods and snacks did you have to eliminate from your lifestyle?

Almost everything I gave up sweets chocolates and the biggest fizzy drinks or juices its just filled with unnecessary calories 

What are your favorite 3 fitness exercises?

I love anything with legs thats my ultimate favourite cause thats where I feel strongest.

So lunges or squats are always a goodie.

I also enjoy running funny enough, its freeing and just some good music to up your mood.

 

What are your favourite Slender You Products and how do you incorporate them into your daily regime?

Slimming Tonics is life! I love it i can actually drink like 4litres easily.

The Slender shake is also on my favourite list because it's palatable I actually get nauseas with some other brands and this isn't heavily sweet so I enjoy it and its easier to drink.

The Skinny Cappucino and Pudding is also really good i freeze my pudding so its like a nice ice cream if I want a sweet treat.

How often do you work out a week? And what is your workout routine/schedule?

I usually workout 4 or 5 times a week.

It consists of 3 x 45min resistance workouts and 1 or 2 cardio sessions depending on how good i manage my time

What does your diet look like? Do you commit to a special diet? (e.g. vegetarian, vegan, low carb, low fat)

Because I'm still breastfeeding I have to eat! So my diet is high protein low carb. 

Breakfast is usually oats or a omelet with chicken or pastrami 

Green smoothie with Slender Shake 

Lunch

Tuna and boiled eggs or the previous nights dinner or,

Rye/seeded bread with tuna or chicken cheese avo

Snack yogurt and fruit with chia seeds

Dinner 

Protein chicken/steak/lean mince with veggies

Do you have cheat days? If yes, what is your most favorite cheat meal?

In the beginning I would say for the first 3-4months I didnt have a cheat meal I was really consistent

Now on weekends il have a meal with my family I choose to still have it cooked at home. So it would be vetkoek and mince curry or pasta I love pasta

If i do have takeout its usually KFC dunked chicken wings 

 

Many people find it hard to eat healthy on a daily basis. How do you make sure to keep a healthy diet in your everyday life

Meal Prepping is key , if i have healthy meals ready prepped I have no excuse to eat bad. I prep my proteins on a Sunday and then il usually just cook up my veggies and eat the same food for about 2 or 3days. 

 So if life gets busy as it usually does, i can always just grab a ready made meal.

 

Besides being a very Fitness enthusiastic person, you don’t restrain to share pictures of your after-pregnancy body. Do you think body positivity is something people are afraid of in SA?

Definitely! I might be fitter now but my body still doesn't fit the "fit life" standard per say. I still have a lower belly and loose skin and I'm proud of what I have accomplished at every stage of this process and thats why I choose to share it. I'm very passionate about women and especially moms. I feel the reason a lot of women don't aspire to be fit and healthy is because they don't see women who look like them in this space. So because of a lack of representation it will seem like it cannot be accomplished. The only image of fit moms are the ones without stretch marks and bellies or cellulite and majority of women don't fall in this spectrum.

Give us your top 3 tips for Post Preggie Moms to Bounce Back to shape

Definitely listen to your body and start slow. Its not a race there is no finish line. Its a journey.

You will need to build a lot of strength don't give up no matter how frustrating it is everyday u keep going you get a little stronger. This is especially for women who recently gave birth. We underestimate how much our bodies went through being pregnant and giving birth. And we can give up prematurely because it is frustrating to have to start from scratch.
